Whiteflies

Identification

Size: 1–2 mm long
Color: White wings with pale yellow body
Description: Whiteflies are tiny, winged insects that feed on plant sap and gather on the underside of leaves. When disturbed, they rise in small white clouds and can quickly spread between indoor plants, shrubs, and greenhouse crops.

Whiteflies are common plant pests that affect ornamental plants, vegetables, and greenhouse crops. They live mainly on the underside of leaves, where they pierce plant tissue and feed on sap. Because they are small and often hidden, infestations can build up before they are noticed.

As they feed, whiteflies weaken plants and stunt healthy growth. Heavy infestations can cause leaves to yellow, curl, and drop early. These insects reproduce quickly in warm conditions, which allows populations to grow fast and spread to nearby plants.

Whiteflies are most easily identified by their movement. When an infested plant is touched or shaken, small white insects will fly up in a noticeable cloud before settling back down.

Look closely at the underside of leaves for clusters of tiny white adults. You may also see small, flat immature stages attached to the leaf surface. These insects often gather along leaf veins where they feed.

One of the first signs of whiteflies is a cloud of small white insects that appear when plants are disturbed. Leaves may begin to turn yellow, wilt, or curl as feeding continues. Plants can also show slower growth and overall decline.

You may notice a sticky residue on leaves or nearby surfaces. This substance can lead to black mold forming on foliage, which further affects the plant’s appearance and health.

Regular inspection of plants, especially the undersides of leaves, is important during warm months, when whiteflies are most active. Catching activity early helps reduce the chance of a large infestation spreading through your landscape or greenhouse.

Keep plants spaced properly to allow good airflow and avoid overcrowding. For properties with recurring whitefly issues, professional pest control services can help manage populations and protect plant health throughout the growing season.
