Sowbugs

Identification

Size: Sowbugs usually measure 0.25 to 0.75 inches (6 to 19 millimeters) in length. Their bodies are oval, flattened, and made up of several overlapping plates.
Color: Most sowbugs are dark gray or slate colored. Their segmented shells give them a rough, armored appearance.
Description: Sowbugs are small crustaceans that live in damp environments. They are often found outdoors in soil, mulch, leaf litter, and under rocks or logs. Although harmless, they can become a nuisance when they enter homes in large numbers while seeking moisture. Sowbugs cannot survive in dry conditions and will usually die indoors unless they find a damp area.

Sowbugs thrive in areas that stay consistently moist. They have gill like structures that require humidity in order to function, which is why they are commonly found in gardens, flowerbeds, compost piles, basements, and crawl spaces. Outdoors they play a natural role by feeding on decaying organic material. Indoors they become a concern when they wander into living spaces that provide the moisture they need.

These pests do not bite, sting, or spread disease. However, their presence can indicate excessive moisture in or around the home. Large numbers of sowbugs entering a structure often point to issues such as leaks, poor drainage, or high humidity levels. Effective control focuses on reducing moisture and removing sheltered hiding spots that allow them to flourish.

  • Small, oval shaped pest with a segmented, armored body

  • Typically gray in color

  • Two antennae at the head and seven pairs of legs

  • Slow moving and often found in groups

  • Found in damp and shaded locations such as gardens, mulch beds, basements, or crawl spaces

  • Easily seen when lifting stones, logs, or debris outdoors

  • Groups of sowbugs found in moist indoor spaces such as laundry rooms, basements, or bathrooms

  • Presence of decaying organic matter or excessive dampness around the home exterior

  • Dead sowbugs indoors when they cannot find sufficient moisture

  • Reduce moisture by repairing leaks and improving ventilation in basements and crawl spaces

  • Use dehumidifiers in damp areas

  • Seal cracks and entry points around the foundation

  • Remove mulch, leaves, and debris that create damp conditions near the home

  • Ensure gutters and downspouts direct water away from the structure

  • Store firewood and building materials off the ground

  • Contact professional pest control if sowbugs continue to appear indoors despite moisture reduction
