Leaf hopper

Identification

Size: 3–10 mm long
Color: Green, yellow, or brown, sometimes with markings
Description: Leafhoppers are small, fast-moving insects that feed on plant sap. They jump quickly when disturbed and can damage trees, shrubs, and garden plants.

Leafhoppers are common outdoor pests that feed on many types of plants, including trees, shrubs, grass, and garden crops. They have narrow, wedge-shaped bodies and strong back legs that allow them to jump sideways or fly short distances when disturbed.

These insects feed by piercing plant leaves and stems and sucking out sap. As they feed, they damage the leaf tissue. Over time, this feeding causes leaves to develop small pale or white spots. If the infestation grows, leaves may turn yellow, curl, or dry out.

Leafhoppers are most active in warm weather and can produce several generations in one season. Because they move quickly and spread easily, infestations can grow fast and affect multiple plants in the same area.

Leafhoppers are easiest to identify by their quick movement. When you touch or shake a plant, they will jump or fly away right away. This fast, sideways jumping motion is a key sign.

Look for small, slender insects on the underside of leaves. You may also notice tiny pale spots on the leaf surface where they have been feeding. In some cases, you might see thin, empty skins left behind as the insects grow.

Leafhopper damage usually shows up on the leaves first. Common signs include:

  • Small white or pale spots on leaves
  • Yellowing or browning along the edges
  • Leaves that curl or look dry
  • Plants that seem weaker or grow more slowly
  • Small insects jumping away when plants are touched

Check plants regularly during warm months, especially the underside of leaves. Early signs of pale spotting can help you catch the problem before it spreads.

Keep plants healthy by watering and spacing properly. Avoid overcrowding, as tight plant growth makes it easier for pests to move between plants. If leafhoppers are a repeated issue in your area, professional pest control services can help reduce populations and protect your landscape.
