Grain beetles

Identification

Size: Grain beetles are very small insects that typically measure 0.08 to 0.12 inches (2 to 3 millimeters) in length. Their bodies are long and narrow, allowing them to move easily through stored food products.
Color: Most grain beetles are reddish brown or dark brown. Their bodies have ridged wing covers and a flat, slender shape.
Description: Grain beetles are common stored product pests that infest dry foods such as grain, flour, cereal, rice, pasta, dried fruits, spices, and pet food. They are capable of fitting into tiny openings and can quickly spread throughout a pantry. Although they do not harm humans, their presence leads to food contamination and spoilage.

Grain beetles thrive in warm and humid environments where food is stored for long periods. They are frequently found in pantries, cupboards, basements, and food storage facilities. Infestations often begin when infested products are brought into the home. Once inside, grain beetles can move between packages by squeezing through small gaps or chewing into thin materials.

Female grain beetles lay eggs directly inside or near food sources. Larvae feed on the product until they mature. While adults may sometimes be visible outside of food containers, most activity occurs within the infested goods. Over time, contaminated products may develop a dusty residue, clumping, or an unpleasant odor caused by feeding and moisture buildup.

Grain beetles can reproduce quickly and spread throughout a storage area if not addressed. Effective control includes removing infested food, cleaning shelves, reducing humidity, and storing replacement food in sealed containers.

  • Wing covers with ridges or grooves

  • Frequently seen inside grain based foods

  • Adults may crawl on shelves, counters, or near windows

  • Spread of insects to multiple food packages in the same area

  • Increased activity around dry pet food or stored birdseed

  • Store all dry goods in airtight containers made of glass or thick plastic

  • Inspect packages before buying to ensure they are sealed and not damaged

  • Keep pantry shelves clean and free of crumbs or spilled food

  • Rotate food routinely so older items are used before newer ones
