Drain flies

Identification

Size: 2–5 mm long
Color: Grey, tan, or brown
Description: Drain flies are small, fuzzy insects commonly found around sinks, drains, and other damp areas, where they breed in organic buildup inside plumbing systems.

Drain flies are small insects commonly found in homes and commercial buildings. They thrive in moist environments and are most often seen near sinks, bathtubs, showers, floor drains, and other areas with standing water or slow drainage. Their presence usually indicates organic buildup within drains or underlying plumbing issues.

These flies breed in the gelatinous film of decomposing organic matter that accumulates along the inner walls of pipes. Eggs are laid directly in this buildup, where larvae feed and develop before emerging as adults. Because of their short life cycle, drain fly populations can increase rapidly if the breeding source is not properly addressed.

Drain flies are weak fliers and tend to rest on nearby walls, ceilings, or fixtures rather than travel far from their breeding site. While they do not bite or transmit disease, infestations can become a persistent nuisance and may raise sanitation concerns, particularly in kitchens, restaurants, and healthcare facilities.

Effective control requires eliminating the source of moisture and organic buildup inside drains. Surface treatments alone are rarely effective, making professional pest control services essential for identifying breeding sites and preventing recurring infestations.

Drain flies are very small, typically measuring only a few millimetres in length, with fuzzy bodies and wings that give them a moth-like appearance. Their wings are often held roof-like over the body when resting. They are poor flyers and usually move in short hops or brief fluttering motions.

They are most commonly found resting on bathroom or kitchen walls, near sinks, or around floor drains. Unlike fruit flies, drain flies are slower, appear hairier, and tend to stay close to drains rather than food sources.

Common signs of a drain fly infestation include small, fuzzy flies repeatedly appearing near sinks, showers, toilets, or floor drains. You may notice them resting on nearby walls, mirrors, or fixtures, especially in bathrooms or basements.

Another sign is seeing flies emerge directly from a drain. Persistent sightings over several days usually indicate active breeding inside plumbing. Slow drains, foul odours, or excess moisture can further suggest conditions favourable to drain fly development.

Preventing drain flies involves reducing moisture and eliminating organic buildup inside drains. Regular drain maintenance, proper sanitation, and prompt repair of leaks or slow drains can help reduce favourable breeding conditions.

Household sprays and surface cleaners typically do not address the source of infestations. For lasting prevention, drains must be thoroughly cleaned and treated to remove organic residue. Professional pest control services can identify hidden breeding sites and apply targeted treatments to prevent drain flies from returning.
