Silverfish

Identification

Size: Silverfish typically range from 0.5 to 1 inch (12 to 25 millimeters) in length. Their bodies are long, flat, and taper toward the back.
Color: Most silverfish are light gray or silvery blue. Their bodies have a metallic appearance due to tiny scales that cover their surface.
Description: Silverfish are small, wingless insects that move quickly in a fish like motion. They prefer dark and humid environments and often hide in bathrooms, basements, kitchens, and storage areas. Silverfish feed on materials that contain starch, sugars, or cellulose. This makes items such as paper, books, cardboard, clothing, and pantry goods especially vulnerable.

Silverfish are nocturnal insects that thrive in areas with high humidity. They can survive for long periods without food but will actively seek out materials that provide starch or protein. Their feeding habits can cause noticeable damage to stored items, especially when infestations grow larger.

These insects are often found near moisture sources. Common locations include bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and kitchens. Silverfish are capable of squeezing into tiny cracks and hiding under flooring, inside wall voids, or behind stored objects. Their presence is usually discovered through the damage they leave behind rather than through direct sightings.

Although silverfish do not spread disease or bite humans, they are persistent pests that can damage belongings over time. Controlling humidity is an important part of long term prevention. Infestations may require targeted treatments to eliminate insects hiding in hard to reach areas.
